Ocean inspired jewellery

“It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobbled streets silent and the hunched courters'-and-rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea.”

“Now behind the eyes and secrets of the dreamers in the streets rocked to sleep by the sea, see the titbits and topsyturvies, bobs and buttontops, bags and bones, ash and rind and dandruff and nailparings, saliva and snowflakes and moulted feathers of dreams, the wrecks and sprats and shells and fishbones, whale-juice and moonshine and small salt fry dished up by the hidden sea.”

I love reading and listening to Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas. Dylan’s interpretation of welsh life in a small coastal town he called Llareggub (buggerall) was for me, the first taste of his creative genius. I have been inspired to create a piece based on Dylans work and the small fishing town of LLareggub with its houses as blind as moles, boys dreaming wicked, lips is a penny, hotwater bottle bodies, hear the dew falling and Cockled cobbles that run down through the seaweed smelling town to the fishing boat bobbing sea.

Inspired by the famous Three Cliffs Bay, Gower.

Octopus and silver seashell necklace by Gower silversmith Pa-pa.

To celebrate world oceans day I created a majestic piece for a photo shoot at Oxwich bay, Gower. As the sun was setting over the sand dunes of Oxwich Bay, I captured a magnificent light that settled beautifully on the piece worn by  local model Lowrie Caswell.

Pa-pa's Silver octopus sits amidst aquamarine, grey pearl and blue feldspath beads, cushioned by silver whelk, mussel, cockle and mussel shells to form this one off World Ocean necklace. Visit http:// ww.pa-pa.co.uk/orig.cfm for more info and prices on these unique jewellery designs from local artist and silversmith Pa-pa. Or visit the Pa-pa jewellery Gallery, At the Hay Barn, next to Gower Heritage Centre to view this necklace.

Oystermouth oysters, Mumbles, Swansea in silver by Pa-pa jewellery.

Oystermouth, Mumbles at the westerly end of Swansea Bay was home to an ancient oyster farming industry dating back hundred's of years, famous worldwide for it's tasty shellfish in the mid 19th century.
The oyster farmers of Oystermouth in the 1860's used 'skiffs', locally designed boats with a dredge attached to the bottom of the boat raking the shellfish from the beds below. Having overfished the area for hundreds of years the industry unfortunately collapsed.
There is talk of a new and exciting developement for the area however. Proposals have been put forward for a Swansea Bay lagoon which could host a variety of marine sports, conservation and education zones and a renewed interest in oyster and mussel shell farming along its lagoon beds.

This most recent design in solid silver and pearls is a celebration of Oystermouths world renowned oyster industry and will hopefully mark its return with the new 2013 proposal.
Adjustable in length to 24 inches this piece can be worn high uopn the neck doubled up or it can hang at its full length at the waist. See more at http://www.pa-pa.co.uk/swanseabay.cfm
